With higher environmental protection requirements, green functional coatings will enjoy greater development

07 Aug, 2025

With the improvement of living standards, our requirements for materials in the process of residential construction are getting higher and higher. However, traditional coatings are often harmful to human health and pollute the environment, which can no longer meet people's pursuit of a high-quality life. Nowadays, people not only demand that coatings be beautiful and durable, but also pay more attention to whether they are toxic and have an impact on human health and the environment. Moreover, the total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of traditional coatings pose a direct threat to our environment, society and human beings themselves, and they are the second largest source of pollution in modern society. Therefore, the pollution problem caused by coatings to the environment has received increasing attention, and green and environmentally friendly coatings have emerged as a result.

At present, the development of environmentally friendly green coatings is being strengthened in countries around the world. Data shows that in developed countries, the utilization rate of green and environmentally friendly decorative materials is between 80% and 90%, while in China, it only accounts for 12%. Many decorative materials labeled as "green and environmentally friendly" on the market are 2 to 5 times more expensive than ordinary materials. This shows that there is a huge market demand for green and environmentally friendly coatings.

The development and application of environmentally friendly green coatings in countries around the world have shown a strong upward trend. The development speed of environmentally friendly coatings is extremely fast and has already accounted for 30% of the world's total coating production. Among the three application fields of the coatings industry, environmentally friendly coatings account for a considerable proportion in two fields of ******. For instance, in the field of architectural coatings, environmentally friendly coatings hold an absolute advantage in industrialized countries.

The main research direction of green and environmentally friendly coatings

At present, the main research issues of green coatings are as follows:

1. Eliminate staining from the source of the coating industry rather than at the end of the treatment. For solvent-based coatings, the use of harmful and toxic solvents and substances that have been clearly stipulated abroad should be strictly prohibited. New types of coatings with non-toxic and harmless solvents should be vigorously developed.

2. The synthetic method should be "atomic economical", ensuring that as many atoms participating in the reaction process as possible enter the final product.

3. In the synthetic method, substances that are harmful to human health and the environment should be avoided as much as possible and not produced.

4. Design new types of coatings with high utilization rate, high efficiency, high performance and low pollution. (5) Try not to use harmful or toxic additives.

Development Outlook

Easy to use, with reduced technical requirements and long-lasting effects

From an economic perspective, more functional coatings that are convenient to apply and have long-lasting effects will be developed. However, functional coatings with complex construction and short duration of functional effects will gradually fade out of the market. Such as exterior wall coatings for buildings, anti-fouling and anti-corrosion coatings for Marine vessels, etc.

Higher environmental protection requirements

Green, healthy and harmless to humans are the ultimate requirements for the environmental protection of coatings. As people pay more and more attention to the environment and their own health, the requirements for environmentally friendly coatings will continue to rise.

For coatings that are prone to causing pollution, especially secondary pollution, such as fireproof coatings, not only are continuous improvements made in the process system, but also the formula is refined to achieve a truly green and environmentally friendly effect.

With the progress of human society, the requirements for coatings will become increasingly higher. Although various coatings have been developed at present, they are still difficult to fully meet people's requirements for greenness, functionality and personalization. There are still many problems to be solved. With the continuous improvement of people's understanding and the continuous refinement of scientific and technological means, green functional coatings will achieve greater development.
